Session Description:
Managing acute, postoperative pain in canine and feline patients is critical to minimize suffering and prevent the development of chronic pain. Pain management guidelines advocate for preventive, multimodal surgical pain protocols that combine multiple analgesics with different modes of action along the pain pathway. This talk will review the principles of acute pain management and provide specific treatment recommendations that can help practitioners optimize perioperative pain protocols for their patients. Topics covered include 1) Understanding the importance of pain management. 2) Recognizing acute pain (pain scoring) 3) Treating acute pain, 4) Principles of multimodal analgesia, 5) Treatment options
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Wilson is a board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist currently living in Blacksburg, Va. He attended North Carolina State University for veterinary school and completed a rotating internship and residency at the University of Tennessee. He has lived on the East Coast his whole life and has served on the veterinary school faculty at University of Pennsylvania, Angell Animal Medical Center, and Virginia Tech. He has also worked in private practice near Philadelphia. Currently, he owns his own anesthesia and pain management consulting business and is excited to be part of the Elanco team. Dr. Wilson is an outdoor fan and loves hiking, birdwatching, and kayaking. He lives with his wife, Avril, and three dogs (Lacy, Hurley, and Dulcie).
