September is Animal Pain Awareness Month:

Because Their Pain is Our Pain

The International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management (IVAPM) is excited to celebrate Animal Pain Awareness Month with veterinary professionals around the world in September 2015. In keeping with the IVAPM’s commitment to promote, enhance and advance pain management, this campaign is intended to raise owner awareness and recognition of both acute and chronic pain in animals.   Click HERE for more information.

Ketamine Rescheduling Awareness

The International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management (IVAPM) is in full support of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s (WSAVA) efforts to stop the international rescheduling of Ketamine. In addition to its use as an anesthetic agent, Ketamine is a critical medication used in pain management in animals. The mechanism of action of Ketamine (NMDA receptor antagonism) delivered as a Constant Rate Infusion has been proven to be effective in the prevention and correction of severe neuropathic pain and spinal cord wind-up. The loss of Ketamine in veterinary practice would result in the needless suffering of many patients and we strongly oppose this action. The entire membership of the IVAPM has been asked to add their signatures to the petition in support of WSAVA’s ketamine campaign.  We are very grateful for WSAVA’s efforts to keep ketamine available for our patients.

Learn How to Recognize Pain in Animals

Sick and injured animals in the wild are the most vulnerable to predators so they hide their pain. Our companion and farm animals have inherited this same instinct. Signs of pain in animals may be very subtle and hard to recognize them.

Try the IVAPM Dosage Calculator. You can easily determine the recommended dose of commonly-used pain medications used to treat dogs and cats based on patient weight.
